DVD REVIEW: SHAWN MICHAELS: MY JOURNEY

I just had the pleasure of watching WWE Home Video’s newest DVD release; Shawn Michaels: My Journey. There will always be debate as to who the greatest in-ring performer in the history of pro-wrestling and WWE is. After last year’s WrestleMania match between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, HBK earned my vote as the best ever.

There isn’t a televised Shawn Michaels match that I’ve never seen. However, watching Shawn himself sitdown with former CBS Journalist, Michael Cole, and narrate the history of his own in-ring journey through the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s was fascinating.

Watching Shawn mature both personally and professionally as he worked his way through WCCW, AWA and WWE was fun for a lifelong HBK and WWE fan like myself.

Shawn pulled no punches, especially when discussing how difficult it was to do business with Hulk Hogan for their Icon vs. Icon SummerSlam match. To be blunt, I’ve never heard anyone who has done business with Hulk Hogan say it wasn’t difficult. Tthat should generate some chatter in the wweuniverse.com forums. I may even get an unfriendly phone call, brother!

Regardless, I was spellbound watching Shawn narrate his Hall of Fame worthy career and watching all of his greatest matches again. This DVD set now takes on historical significance, because Shawn will see his career come to an end if he cannot break the Undertakers undefeated WrestleMania streak on March 28 in Phoenix by defeating the Phenom.

Regardless of who wins the Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels match at WrestleMania 26, the signing of that match has made this DVD set a must have for any collector.

Amazon.com published a Preview Clip (click to view) from the new Shawn Michaels DVD showing Michaels talking about the WrestleMania 25 match vs. The Undertaker.

The clip shows Michaels out-of-character in a sit-down interview setting with Michael Cole as Michaels struggles for words trying to capture his thoughts on the match. He said there was a certain point in the match where he just knew it was more than “just good.”

“Even with some of those guys that have reputations for being, you know, very good, there’s a difference between that and a guy where everything can fall apart and still nothing is going to miss a step,” Michaels said. “You then have to build it with this (points to his heart). And that either makes it or breaks it. Good is good. Fine is fine. When it’s going on, you can start to sense it; you can start to feel it.”

Shawn Michaels’s “My Journey” DVD is scheduled for release on March 9. The DVD includes matches from Michaels’s beginnings in World Class and the AWA before joining WWE. Michaels provides alternate commentary on historical WWE matches vs. Bret Hart, Ric Flair, and Triple H.

Complete match listing and artwork for the upcoming Shawn Michaels triple disc DVD set titled “My Journey” have been released. The DVD will be out on March 9 and will contain a total of 25 full matches spread over three discs. Notably missing from this release is the usual one hour sit down documentary that are usually found in these type of discs.

Matches from his time in the Rockers, to his first WWE title win and all the way up to the classic match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 are all part of this release.

WWE has released the following trailer for their January 26 DVD release, The Best of Raw 2009, which features a lot of Shawn & DX:

The TLC PPV DVD released today has the post TLC Tag Team Title Match as an extra. Fans who buy the DVD get to see DX celebrating their title wins with the live crowd.

The following synopsis was released for the forthcoming WWE DVD release, “Shawn Michaels: My Journey”:
